Men’s Suits – Understanding the Suit’s Parts

In this article we will discuss the parts that make up a man’s suit. Although off the rack suits afford you little flexibility in adjusting these parts, the man who goes with a bespoke or made to measure suit has the freedom of choosing the option that best compliment his body. In any case, all men should understand the basics of the suit and its parts so that they buy a garment that accentuates their most positive traits.

Single or Double Breasted

The first and perhaps most noticeable element of the suit is whether it is single or double-breasted. Single-breasted suits have a single row of buttons down the front, and the jacket flaps only overlap enough to permit buttoning. A double-breasted suit has two rows of buttons, and the front overlaps sufficiently to allow both flaps to be attached to the opposite row of buttons. The choice between single- and double-breasted is a matter of personal taste, though the vast majority of American men choose single breasted suits as that this is what is readily available to them; also a lack of familiarity with the double-breasted option may account for the single-breasted suit’s dominance. Thin gentlemen, particularly those who are somewhat taller, can benefit greatly from double-breasted suits, as they will give a fuller appearance to the figure; on larger men, double-breasted suits can have a tendency to draw attention to the midsection, so careful attention and an expert tailor should be employed.

Lapels

Lapels come in a variety of styles with a number of options. The lapels’ width is perhaps subject to the most variance, with the extremely narrow lapels of the 1950s standing in stark contrast to the excessively wide lapels of the 1970s. As is the case with much of classic fashion, the most timeless lapels are of a moderate width. In addition to different widths, suit lapels come in two styles: notched, which has a wide V-shaped opening where the lapel and collar join; and peaked, which flares out in a sharp point with a very narrow deep V at the join. Notched and peaked lapels are equally classic, though the latter are most commonly found on double-breasted jackets. A peak lapel on a single-breasted jacket is an excellent way to raise its level of formality, but is almost impossible to find on anything but a custom made suit

Waist Buttons

A suit jacket has either one row of buttons or two, depending on whether it is single- or double-breasted. A single-breasted jacket has a single row of buttons, numbering anywhere from one to four, though two and three are the most common. The three-button jacket is the most traditional configuration, taking its cue from English riding jackets; properly worn, it gives the illusion of height. Traditionally, only the middle or second button is fastened when standing, though the top two buttons may be fastened to produce a slightly more formal appearance. Two-button suits are a slightly later innovation, and because they show more of …

Let the Revolution Commence – Riddell Revolution Football Helmets

Football equals concussion. This is an equation that keeps players, coaches and parents to be always on guard. Whether it is amateurs or professionals, injuries are incurred by players every season. And this is not just the bruising or bleeding that is seen on the surface — serious internal injuries are present as well. An impact may and will prove fatal if delivered with a great deal of force. Having hormonal-charged high school students and egotistical professional football players in the field, this is inevitable. Building upon this fact, the leading manufacturer of football headgear introduced the new Riddell Revolution football helmets.

The Study

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center conducted a 3-year study among high school players, which demonstrates a considerable drop on the percentage that concussion will likely to occur. To be exact, the authors claim that players sporting the new Riddell Revolution football helmets were 31{64aad3a316df32ff60dab9c8534014c5cfdef308ef860a6ce60ff66eaa8cfaf6} less prone to experience concussion as weighed against those wearing the traditional headgear. The study also incorporates the symptoms, severity and the recovery period of a concussion. This part reflects that no matter the helmet type, such variable made no difference with regard the healing period of the players. Though such study shows great development and evaluation on the Riddell Revolution football helmets, Riddell Inc. still posts the warning that no helmet or headgear can stop each and every concussion that comes in the way of a football player. Michael Collins, one of the authors, extended such caution. Collins further stressed that players must be fully recovered before entering the field after a concussion. There is nothing more vulnerable than a football player impaired by a recent injury, to suffer the same fate for the second time.

The Goal

The whole purpose of it all is to minimize the possibility of a concussion. It took the company more than 4 years before the Riddell Revolution football helmets came to being. This is not a simple project, knowing the intricacies of quality headgear, Riddell spent much time on the field as well as the laboratory to actually see if the new design would be at par with the standard of excellence maintained by the company and the expectations of the public towards such equipment.

The Sensitive Part

Most of the field related concussions are brought about by contact blows coming from the side of the head; this is one of the findings presented in a study partly sponsored by NFL charities. With such conclusion, Riddell proceeded to formulate, design and manufacture headgear that will provide further protection in the areas specified in the study. This gave birth to the structural change offered in the latest line of Riddell Revolution football helmets. Said alteration represents the first in virtually 25 years. …

Coaching Youth Football – An Insight On How To Run A Successful Youth Football Program

I’ve been coaching youth football now for 24 years from age levels 7 to 14 years of age.and I’ve seen just about every imaginable scenario a coach can go through when coaching youth football. I was also a certified High School official for about 7 years or so. I have also seen many changes through the years not only through a coaches eyes but also through a parents eyes.

I’ve been on both sides of the ball. As a coach I had the opportunity to coach as a head coach and an assistant. As a parent I have 2 sons that played both youth and high school football. Both were average players. Knowing my place as a parent AND as a coach helped me get through some difficult parenting times.

If your looking to get involved with, or currently coaching youth football, this article will give you an outline so your team can get the instruction needed to be competitive. If your reading this article as a parent I’ll let you know what’s expected of you in return for the coaches giving their voluntary time to not only coach your child but to help mold them into responsible young adults.

My philosophy on football is this. Dominate the clock and you have a better chance of success. By that I mean you need to take charge offensively. Move the ball down the field 10 yards at a time. eat up the clock. Get into the red zone and score! Defensively SHUT THEM DOWN!! It’s not new and it’s not rocket science. Coaches lose sight of this at the high school and youth football level. That’s why repetition is needed. It breeds success.

First things first. As a head coach, you have to have your whole practice, program and philosophy outlined. Usually a youth football practice is 2 hours long. It doesn’t matter how many nights or days you practice you can use the same principles as will be outlined in this article.

BEFORE you start ANY practice, as head coach, you should have a parent/coaches meeting WITH the children attending the meeting. During the meeting make sure you cover the following:

  • Overview of your program
  • Your Coaching Philosophy
  • Introduction of coaches and their responsibilities
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Team rules
  • Expectations for player conduct both on and off the field(including school)
  • Expectations for parent conduct on and off the field
  • Importance of following staff directions
  • Season goals and objectives
  • Training and practice routines
  • Player selection (for team and starting positions)
  • Contingency plans for bad weather for outdoor sports
  • Keeping hydrated during hot weather
  • Equipment
  • Pregame and pre-practice Meals. What and when to eat.

I also have my parents sign a form saying that they understand everything that was gone over in the meeting and they understand that their involvement is as a supporter for their child AND the team. I will give you what I use in an upcoming article.

I also have the children sign an agreement. Lots of good stuff …

Boxing Workouts on Your MP3 Or iPod – Why They Work Better Than Boxing DVDs, and How to Get Started

An authentic boxing workout is very different from box-aerobics. In an aerobic style class/DVD you punch into the air. With a boxing workout you hit targets – punching bags or punch mitts. But you still need a routine to call the shots and push you through your workout. This article explains why an audio / Mp3 routine works better than a DVD for boxing, and gives 5 tips for getting started.

Tip 1 – Watch the target, not the screen.

If you are following a boxing workout on a TV or computer screen, there is a higher chance of miss-hitting the target. When you hit a target such as a punching bag or punch mitt you need to be focused on that target, not a screen. One reason is the safety factor. The angle of your fist against the target is critical. Anyone who has miss-hit a hook or uppercut knows what I’m talking about. Ouch.

Tip 2 – Learn the moves visually, then switch to audio.

Audio works best, but only once you have learned the moves. If I say throw a double jab, cross, hook, cross but you don’t know how to throw a proper jab or even what it looks like, it’s going to be difficult to learn that from audio only. It is possible, but only if the audio track contains very clear technique tips. So the main point is – learn your good technique from a proper boxing trainer (not a personal trainer, unless they really know boxing), or from video. Then switch to audio only.

Tip 3 – Train the Authentic way.

Find a boxing workout routine that has authentic punches and combos. In other words, not box-aerobics. If you are going to do a fitness boxing workout, you may as well learn to punch correctly. After all, someone is going to want to see your uppercut one day – so you’d better be able to look the part! Also, in my view the “beat timed” aerobics approach does not work for boxing. How can you keep a beat for a jab, cross, slip cross, hook, cross combo? Especially on the punch mitts!

Tip 4 – Take the workout with you.

One of my students, Louise, 46, and from the UK had lost a lot of weight with her class boxing workouts. She went on holidays recently and wanted to keep up the good work. She was able to load an audio boxing workout to her iPod and work out while she was away. Her partner knew how to hold punch mitts, so they packed a pair to take with them. That’s the other great thing about an audio workout – it travels well.

Tip 5 – Make sure your audio workout is compatible with your boxing equipment.

What sort of boxing equipment have you got? Punch mitts (also called focus pads)? Punching Bag? Speedbag? If your audio or DVD routine is designed to work with shadow boxing (air punching) it may not …

Basketball Standards, Hoops and Goals – What’s the Difference?

I work for an online sports paraphernalia company that offers a wide variety of basketball apparel and equipment. So much so that potential customers are often confused about what to buy and what will ultimately fit their needs. The majority of the confusion pertains to basketball standards, hoops and goals and what each entails. Well, here’s the skinny on each.

Basketball Standard: Basketball standards are the most expensive of the bunch. They can be either portable or stationary. When you think basketball standard you should think of the type of basketball system that is used in the NBA or out on the playground. Simply put, a basketball standard is the entire package – rim, backboard, net and pole.

Basketball Hoop: When little Johnny writes to Santa Claus telling him he wants a basketball hoop for Christmas, he means that he wants the entire package. However, a basketball hoop is not quite the entire package. A basketball hoop is the combination of a rim, net and backboard, but no pole. Think of your high school gym. Yes, you probably had a basketball standard in there somewhere which the basketball team most likely used for real games. But you also had basketball hoops on the surrounding walls. That is what a basketball hoop is – a rim, net and backboard that can be fastened to an already existing structure.

Basketball Goal: The name of this particular piece of equipment get its name from its intended purpose. The word goal is something you strive towards. In sports, the goal is usually the place where you score points. Well, the same is true in basketball. The goal is just another name for the rim.

When purchasing sporting equipment, it is good to know the difference between the various technical terms associated with each individual sport. If you don’t, you may unintentionally buy something which you did not want.…

The Great Game of Floor Hockey

Anyone who has ever participated in an elementary school gym class probably has some memory of playing floor hockey. This sport allowed both boys and girls the chance to play hockey without having to worry about learning how to skate. Today it’s reaching well beyond the confines of school curriculum and there are leagues for this fun and faced paced competitive activity in many cities.

For someone familiar with ice hockey it doesn’t differ much. Not everyone has the chance or the interest to learn how to skate. Many children live in warm climates where ice is a scarcity. For them the closest they get to hockey is watching an NHL game on television. With floor hockey, though they can go through the paces of a game without having to strap on a pair of skates.

When it’s played as part of physical education class the only equipment used is generally a stick and a ball or rubber puck. This is because there are understood and strictly enforced rules of no contact. However, if it’s a league of floor hockey those rules change and in light of that more safety equipment is required.

A helmet is really a must for any child interested in this sport. They may see it as overkill since they are only playing on a floor, but serious injuries can happen when one child is body checked by another. If the league insists on every floor hockey player wearing a helmet, it’s not even a question that a child will raise.

Knee and elbow pads are a great idea as well. Just as with something like rollerblading or traditional skating, kids can fall forward pretty easily when they lose their footing. This is true in sports including soccer and floor hockey as well. A good set of safety pads under the child’s clothing can really reduce the number of bumps and bruises they’ll sustain.

You can’t play without a stick. Some kids who are already playing the game on ice will be inclined to bring in that stick for playing floor hockey. There are actually sticks just made for playing the game in this setting. It’s a good idea to purchase a stick that is a good fit for the child now. Some parents think they can save a few dollars by buying a bit larger stick that their son or daughter will grow into. This isn’t a good idea as it can present a safety problem for both the child using the stick to play floor hockey with and the other players. If it’s too big for them to easily handle it, it’s not the right stick for them.…

Why is MMA Training the Best Way to Increase Your Fitness?

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) style workouts train your body like a real fighter and you will be in top shape, lean, muscular and really have a “hot” body on the beach.

I’m not talking about the typical gym classes like Boxercise or Tae Bo which is great for cardio but to really change your body shape you need to take it up a level.

If you were training as if for a fight event you need to do a lot of high repetition exercises with weights, this method will greatly increase your Power Endurance, an important component in MMA.

Doing super-sets (i.e 2 exercises straight after each other) or giant sets ( 3 exercises straight after each other) on multiple machines or free weights will challenge your body like no other type of exercise.

Super setting and Giant Setting will bring you to your knees – in a good bad way!

Split the days into an upper body day and lower body the next, your goal is to achieve an intensely progressive workout but don’t over-train.

You could do slow cardio five times a week, but better would be High Intensity Interval Training (Hiit) 2-3 times per week and the weight training 3 times a week and I will guarantee you will be lean and toned as you have ever been.

We are strictly working on for muscle conditioning that is increasing your force out put over a long time which again is Power.

Fitness Adaptation

Varying your routine is must to stop adaptation. You’d be surprised on how good your body is adapting to exercise.

For instance: Ever try running on a treadmill and the first months you probably lose a lot of weight quickly!

Then the treadmill running starts to get easier as you get fitter but then your weight loss starts to plateau… hey you are adapting very well!

The answer is change the routine to sprinting, intervals, slow steep incline walking etc etc. i.e cycle your workouts.

For MMA fighting its all naturally inbuilt in the program: it incorporates everything Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Find that balance during the week to get everything in without burning your body out.

Leg Workouts

Exercise your legs with a lot of sprints, hill climbs or hill charges. Have a look at all the Olympic sprinters to see how their training makes them look!!

Do a lot of stretch kicks, which is swinging legs straight up some call it an Axe Kick.

Kicking techniques also include front kicks and roundhouse kicks.

Again superset you leg exercises like leg extensions, and as soon as you’ve done about 25-30 repetitions, get off and do some stretch kicks.

Do squats then stop to do side kicks — do things like that to try and confuse the muscle and get the best results that burns fat and increase muscles.…
